Chapter 23
âSheâll drive me crazy that Tasha!â Liz shouted to Balthazar over the phone.
âLiz, Iâm not deaf, but if you continue to shout in my ear like this, I definitely will be.â
âI found her a wonderful, two-bedroom apartment, and what did she do?â
âWhat?â
âShe decided to live with Fabien Blanchard, not giving a damn about the fact that I was practically buried in newspapers all day.â
âI would do the same if I were her; not every girl in town gets such a chance.â
âExactly. You should have seen her! She came in with Blanchard all glowing and happy while I was killing myself with guilt!â
âYou will have plenty of time for an apology. You know what I just thought?â
âTell me. Iâm no prophet.â
âLet her interview Fabien Blanchard, and If itâs good, weâll put it in the issue.â
âI donât think thatâs a good idea. I doubt sheâll be able to write a single sentence considering her circumstances and all the stress she has been through.â
âHas been through, so I assume itâs over. You should try to convince her. I am more than sure sheâs going to be okay. Donât underestimate her. She was so focused today, so determined to find that dog, interrogating every single person. By the way, she said we are understaffed and that there needs to be more drive. She needs motivation, and sheâs not a white-winged angel.â
âDo the white-winged angels exist anymore, Hamish?â
âNot among us anyway. Let her do the interview, and let me go now.â
âWell, itâs not that I adore you either, Hamish.â
âListen, when you call me by my surname, I always feel like Iâm in some bad cop movie. Stop it, would you?â
âYouâll have to change your surname then.â
âNo way, Iâm quite proud of it.â
âTell me, what did your parents call you when you were a kid, Balthazar? Just like that? No nickname?â
âNo. Itâs my grandfatherâs name on my dadâs side.â
âA rare name, though, and strange.â
âWhy donât we leave this conversation for another more appropriate time, Liz? Itâs a long and boring story.â
âYouâre probably right. Iâd better sit in silence for a while. Good night.â
âSee you tomorrow, Liz. Bye.â
Liz went upstairs to her bed, thinking about Tasha again. Balthazar was right. Sheâd assign Tasha for an interview and see how it went. Suddenly she heard a beep. It was a message from Antoine.
âZizith, you forgot about me. I should have said youâre a liar. Iâm waiting for a puppy stupidly, no you, no puppy. Just that silly book.â
Another message followed immediately.
âSorry, the book was okay. I liked it a lot.â
Liz called him back.
âHey, why arenât you sleeping?â
âMom and Dad think I am asleep.â
âAnd youâre doing what?â
âPlaying, you?â
âIâm going to sleep. So, how was The Jungle Book?â
âI liked Bagheera and Baloo and Kaa, the snake. They are awesome. When did you read it, Liz?â
âWhen I was of your age.â
âWow.â
âLook, Antoine, Iâm sorry for being late with the puppy, but you will have it, I promise, very soon. Heâs on his way. Be patient, okay?â
âIâll try, but itâs hard. Mom always says Iâm impatient.
